John’s River Weekend My Calm In The Storm
I began going to John’s River Valley Camp on Memorial Day Weekend with my Grandparents in elementary school. For years I celebrated the ending of the school year in the mountains. Spending the weekend with my Grandparents and their church, Beck’s Reformed, was a highlight of my year. It was a fun time to enjoy the Lord’s creation, play with others, and spend time with family.
I had a break during college because of work and other things. I started going back in 1998. I got to carry my Grandmother up and spend time with my Aunt & Uncle. I treasure the time there now more than ever. May is very busy time for me. I love serving the Lord with Arts Alive. I spend two weeks running sound with Arts Alive. I get to spend a week running sound for theater and one week for dance. It is a fun but busy time. Then comes the end of the school year. The John’s River weekend is my chance to breathe.
It great time to read, sit by the river, and talk. We play cards, put together puzzles, and play games. The men cook breakfast Sunday morning. After Sunday morning breakfast, we have a short worship service. Different people pray, sing and share devotions.
The families who come from Beck’s have become friends and like family. In fact some are distantly related. It is a great time to relax and enjoy the simple quiet times. I look around and see the mountains, the river, the sun, the clouds and the rain. God created this world in all of its’ beauty and power. We come to the camp from busy lives. Some people are going through hard and challenging times. Some are in the midst of good times. Coming to the camp reminds of us of times their with family who have gone on to be with the Lord. Coming to camp reminds us of God’s faithfulness through trying times. Coming to camp gives us hope in the Lord for the future. I praise the Lord for the time at John’s River with Beck’s Reformed. God is good!
